Shared OKR ownership is a great way for cross-functional departments, teams & individuals to collaborate and work together on key priorities.

When to share OKRs with Multiple Teams and Multiple Owners?

When it comes down to sharing OKRs, here is a typical scenario that most organizations face -

“Our department head (Director/VP) oversees 4 teams and has an objective to invest in developing all the teams. Each subteam lead has key results attached to his objective, so instead of entering the same key result 4 times at the team level, Is there a way to enter them at the Director/VP level and assign multiple owners."

This is where shared OKRs come to the rescue. In the above scenario, sharing OKRs can help in the following way -

The Department's Objective could be owned by the VP and the KR could be equally owned by all teams under the department so as to not duplicate efforts of creating the same KR 4 times, instead have a single KR owned by multiple teams and the team managers being the multiple owners.

Let us look at another scenario -

“‘My Director of Customer Success wants to Implement a new onboarding program to increase the repeat rate of 1st-time bookers’ can be a shared OKR between the CRM & Marketing Teams. Both the teams and respective team managers can work on the exact same Objective and Key Results with the ability to view on respective team/individual views. How can he do this?”

You could use shared OKRs for this scenario. There could also be some organizations that operate only at 2 levels of OKRs - Company & Department (without individual OKRs). In such cases shared OKRs bring convenience to the process by helping define ownership and accountability clearly.

It can also be cumbersome to create multiple OKRs for every team/individual when they are supposed to be commonly owned, worded & measured. Shared OKRs can help avoid unnecessary duplication and redundancy.

Typical teams that we see having OKRs with shared ownership -

Sales | Marketing, Product & Strategy | Sales, People ops | Finance, Engineering | HR | Training, Customer Operations | Marketing | Customer Support, Product | Operations (Compado)
